Meet the individuals who lead, drive, and support GreenDreamsWomen’s mission

OUR FOUNDER
Tharani (Tara) Jayaratnam

Green Dreams Women was founded by Tharani (Tara) Jayaratnam, a Sri Lankan-born American and Social Impact and ESG consultant. After living in India, Botswana, and the USA since 1983 due to the civil war in Sri Lanka, she returned to Jaffna in 2010. Since then, she has opened a resource center in her family home in Jaffna.

It is her personal relationship to a homeland she had to leave that drives the mission behind Green Dreams Women.

OUR CO-FOUNDER
Indradevy Thambyayah

Ms. Indradevy Thambyayah, fondly known as “Indra Teacher,” was the co-founder of GreenDreamsWomen and a lifelong advocate for education and community service. A graduate of Women’s Christian College (WCC), Chennai, with a BSc in Chemistry and Physics, she began her career teaching in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, in the 1970s before moving to Nigeria. There, she rose to become Director of the Science Department at the Women’s Teachers’ College in Sokoto, where she guided a department of 20 science teachers and inspired countless young women to pursue knowledge and independence.

In 1988, Indra settled in Montreal, Canada, where she lived for the rest of her life. For more than three decades, she worked in the non-profit sector, served as a Commissioner of Oath, and was a trusted advocate for the Tamil immigrant community. Alongside her professional service, she continued her calling as a teacher at Petit Chapiteau School and Simonne Monet School until the pandemic, gaining admiration and respect wherever she went. Her neighbors, students, and church communities knew her for her selfless spirit and devotion to helping others.

In 2013, she returned to her birthplace after 32 years and dedicated her family home in Jaffna to become a Women’s Empowerment Center for GreenDreamsWomen, ensuring that her passion for uplifting women would continue across generations. Fiercely independent, courageous, and deeply rooted in her faith, Indra gave of herself tirelessly, often putting others before her own wellbeing.

She left this world on December 25, 2022, leaving behind a legacy of love, service, and empowerment that continues to guide the mission of GreenDreamsWomen.
